Matzke Park and its History

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:31 pm

Matzke Park is located at the intersection of Jones and Grant roads?Çöadjacent to Matzke Elementary and Bleyl Junior High?Çöin northwest Harris County. Originally the land was owned by Fairbanks Independent School District and was used by the community for recreation activities. When the Fairbanks ISD decided to sell the property then Local residents have played an instrumental role in saving the long-time community green space for park development. Residents formed the nonprofit ABCS to raise funds for park development and have worked in conjunction with Precinct 4, which purchased the land from the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in 1999 for $2.15 million, to make the park a reality.

Estimated construction cost for Phase 1 development is $434,352, and includes an 80-space asphalt parking lot along Copeland Road; water, sewer, and electrical infrastructure; rest room facility; 4,500 linear feet of asphalt-paved trails; and fencing around the perimeter of the 19-acre site. The current soccer fields will remain a feature of the site, along with a cricket field. Future amenities will include playground areas and picnic facilities.

ABCS gave just over $200,000 toward construction of Phase 1 amenities, with the county paying an additional $219,239, plus labor, for site development. The cricket field implements are estimated at $15,000, and will be funded and installed by the Triggers Cricket Club, a registered subsidiary of the Houston Cricket League. The four soccer practice fields, two of which will be shared with the Triggers Cricket Club, will be leased and maintained by the Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Association. ABCS will continue to raise funds for ground facilities, park benches, butterfly garden and picnic pavilion.
